A former supervisor at a Bradford children's home is facing jail after admitting a string of sex offences over 25 years.
Gordon Oliver, who worked with vulnerable children in the city for 15 years, admitted eight indecent assault charges involving two boys and a girl when he appeared in court last September. Yesterday, the 58-year-old had been due to stand trial on further allegations at Bradford Crown Court. But after he pleaded guilty to another indecent assault allegation against a second female and a charge of sexually touching a third boy, prosecutor Michelle Colborne confirmed that his pleas were now acceptable to the Crown and he was remanded in custody to await sentence.
The full details of Oliver's offending has not been revealed in court, but the charges are understood to arise out of his work at the Springfield Children's Home near Bradford Royal Infirmary and later as a social worker.
The abuse covers a period from 1979 when Oliver was based at the children's home, up until 2004 when he was working in the Brighton area. A spokesman for Bradford Council confirmed Oliver worked for the authority's children's services team for 15 years between 1977 and 1992. He was employed in both residential care and later in field work postings - visiting vulnerable children in their own homes.
The authority has now ordered an independent inquiry to find out whether it could have done anything differently to prevent the crimes. Richard Bates, head of children's services for Bradford social services team, said: "We have worked closely with West Yorkshire Police to help bring this matter to a successful conclusion. Now that the criminal matters are concluded an enquiry will be carried out by an external child protection expert to see whether procedures at that time were an issue in this case. We are satisfied that current practices guarantee the safe care of children but we will review them again."
When he was arrested police discovered almost 300 indecent images of youngsters on his computer at his home in Washington Street, Brighton. Such computer images are graded in seriousness from level one up to level five and Judge Wolstenholme was told that more than a quarter were at level four. Oliver admitted 20 charges of possessing indecent pseudo photographs of children during his court appearance five months ago.
Judge Wolstenholme told Oliver: "I am not going to sentence you today because I agree with your counsel that it is going to be important to have an assessment by the probation service. "As you recognise there has to be a custodial sentence and the question for the court on the 17th of February is for how long is it necessary to send you to prison? In the meantime you will be in custody and you will get credit for the time served between now and your eventual sentence

A former teacher who sexually abused a little girl after befriending her parents has been jailed for two-and-a-half years.
Cambridge University graduate Geoffrey Turner, 67, who retired from his job at William Hulme School when he was 59, was told the jail term had to reflect society's 'revulsion' of his crimes.
"I have no doubt you have been a good man, citizen and teacher apart from your commission of these offences", Turner was told by Judge Anthony Gee at Manchester Crown Court.
Turner, of Davey Lane, Alderley Edge, was also ordered to sign the sex offenders register for life and permanently banned from working with children under 17.

A music teacher who admitted sexually assaulting children while they were drugged has been jailed for eight years.
Geoffrey Kitchen, of Scalby Way, Scarborough, pleaded guilty at York Crown Court to a range of assaults on boys aged between nine and 15.
Kitchen, 48, whipped, beat and blindfolded many of his victims. Judge Paul Hoffman described the case as one of the most depraved he had ever come across. The assaults began in 1986 and ended in 2002 when Kitchen was arrested.
On one occasion he handcuffed a boy and tied him with a cord to a bed. He denied seven charges of drugging the children with intent to commit offences on them. The prosecution accepted he had administered the drug amyl nitrate to heighten the boys' pleasure rather than to coerce them.
Andrew Murray, defending, said his client was full of remorse and begged for forgiveness. In sentencing, the Recorder of York, Judge Hoffman, said Kitchen was a risk to the public. He said: "The offences became a way of life for the boys. As I see it this case involved systematic sexual corruption by you of a sadomasochistic nature over a period of 16 years

Former Salisbury College student support and welfare officer Gary Richards has been jailed for two years by a judge at Salisbury Crown Court for sexually abusing two 14-year-old girls.
Richards, 48, a high-ranking official with the Wiltshire Football Association and involved in running soccer tournaments for boys and girls, had admitted seven counts of sexual activity with the two teenage girls, including intercourse with one on one occasion. Richards, of Bingham Road, Salisbury, also admitted possessing indecent images of children.
The court heard how Richards' daughter had discovered an image of one of the 14-year-old girls, who she knew, on her father's mobile phone, and had alerted her mother. When confronted, Richards admitted what he had done and made "frank and full confessions" to the police when he was arrested in May of this year.
The judge sentenced Richards to two years in prison concurrent on all seven charges of sexual abuse, but no further penalty on the charge of possessing indecent images. He also disqualified Richards for an indefinite period from working with children, and placed him on the sex offenders register for ten years

Porthcawl teacher jailed for child abuse video
A teacher who put a "shocking" child sex abuse video on a memory stick was caught after it was found by his pupils at a £1,200-a-term private school.
Robin Taylor, 41, of Swansea, had images ranging up to the most serious "level five" stored on the device.
Tayor, who taught computer skills at St John's School in Porthcawl, was jailed for six months for making and possessing indecent child images.

Sex offences involving child porn have shot up in Kent, latest figures reveal.
While crime overall has fallen in the county, the number of obscene publications offences has risen by 56 per cent in the last year.
Hundreds of thousands of images have been seized, with figures rising by 42 offences, from 75.
Assistant Chief Constable Andy Adams told Kent Online: "We take a really hard line around images of children on computers. Those figures represent some really hard work between Kent Police Public Protection and Digital Forensics units across the county.
"A total of over 125,000 indecent images have been seized and taken out of circulation. There will be more offences recorded as we become more sophisticated in recovering this sort of imagery."

A former Save the Children worker who led a double life as a 'predatory and devious' paedophile was jailed for four years today.
Sohail Ayaz, a leading member of an international child abuse network, came to the UK on a two-year visa after molesting and photographing a 14-year-old boy.
Ayaz, who is also wanted in Italy in connection with a Romanian child sex ring, was arrested at the charity's headquarters earlier this year.
Officers had been concerned he might find a way to use his job to target 'some of the world's most vulnerable children' but their fears proved groundless.

A convicted paedophile, caught working in a West Norwood nursery after staff there recognised him from a national TV programme screened about his previous crimes, has been spared an immediate jail sentence.
Andrew Smith, 37, who evaded CRB checks to get a job this summer at Norwood Manor Day Nursery in Chapel Road, was arrested on September 27, after horrified staff spotted him on ITV1 programme How to Catch a paedophile and alerted police. The programme covered an undercover police operation last year to snare Smith, who sent a string of perverted internet messages and webcam footage of him performing a solo sex act to someone he thought was a 13-year-old girl “Becky”, but was in fact a police officer. He was jailed as a result for the “grooming offences” but released last December.
The nursery did not check his record because it trusted Reed’s recommendation, the court heard. The press were asked not to publish Smith’s address as threats had been made there by parents of children at the £965 a month nursery

Child carer was struck off the childcare register for biting a baby boy in her care.
Geraldine Rama, from Hammersmith in West London, began looking after ten-month-old Michael Omisore in 2003 after meeting his parents Abiodun and Yvonne through their local church.
The couple first suspected she was mistreating their son when Mrs Omisore spotted a red mark on Michael while bathing him. Tests showed he had been bitten with "considerable force" and that both his legs were broken.
Unfortunately for the couple, social workers assumed they had hurt their son and Michael was put on the "at risk" register for three months. Yvonne and Abiodun Omisore's ordeal ended when the judge gave Rama a six-month prison sentence suspended for two years, for inflicting actual bodily harm to the baby

The tiny village of Blaisdon has been rocked by revelations that a priest and teacher at the former Don Bosco school was molesting girls.
Father Peter Carr, 73, pleaded guilty to two charges of indecent assault committed while he was a staff member at the school. Carr, of Orbel Street, Battersea, will be sentenced next Thursday for those two offences, and eight he was convicted of at an earlier trial. His crimes against seven girls from a nearby school in Huntley were committed when they took part in school pantomimes.
He would make them strip before sponging makeup on to their bodies. He was caught 30 years later after the girls made contact via the website Friends Reunited. He admitted two indecent assault charges between June 1975 and June 1979. He has already been convicted after a trial last December of indecently assaulting six other girls. He denied nine charges of indecent assault, but a jury convicted him of eight. He was born in 1935, the year the school was founded, and served as a priest and teacher in the 70s and 80s.

The wife of a former teacher jailed for 12 years for rape wept in court today as his appeal against conviction was abandoned.
Jerome Uche, 51, of Deynecourt Gardens, Wanstead, appeared at the Court of Appeal today and successfully had his sentence reduced by two years but did not pursue an appeal against convictions for rape, indecent assault and attempted rape. Speaking on behalf of the ex-technology teacher, barrister David Emanuel said: “I submit that when one looks at the sentences, the judge was a little on the high side. Here was a man who was a teacher for 25 years with an unblemished record. He's a family man with four children and a prominent member of his local church. These offences came to light in 2006 and there has been no suggestion of repeat offending.”

A teacher has been jailed for sexually molesting young boys and downloading pornographic images.
Paedophile Nigel Palmer, 59, of Belsize Road, Harrow Weald, taught at Roxeth Manor Middle School for 22 years before a colleague found his stash of pornographic images, Wood Green Crown Court heard on Friday. He pleaded guilty to 19 counts last October, including indecent assault and charges of making, taking and possessing indecent photographs. Four of the 19 charges were kept on file.
Palmer denied downloading child pornography when first arrested in 2004, but gave himself away when he accidentally handed the police a disk containing more than 100 indecent images and a detailed diary of his sexual fantasies. Palmer, who was the head of the IT department at the school, in Eastcote Lane, South Harrow, also used a former colleague's internet account to access paedophile websites.
In total police found 1,343 indecent photographs stored on Palmer's work and home computers. A graphic diary account, entitled "first seduction", lead police to trace Palmer's first victim, an eight-year-old boy who he molested in a school storage cupboard in the 1970s. The victim, now an adult, cannot be named for legal reasons.

A former police officer has been jailed for two-and-a-half years for having sex with a 15-year-old boy.
Mark Brigham was a serving PC in the Metropolitan police force when he committed the offence in Portsmouth.
Brigham, who was a lesbian and gay liaison officer for the force, travelled down to the city in August 2008 to attend a party. During the course of the evening he befriended the teenager and was repeatedly told the boy was 15. But in the early hours of the next day Brigham and the boy, who can't be named for legal reasons, engaged in sexual activity in an alleyway. The youngster's family contacted police about a week later after he had told them what had happened.
Brigham, who had served in the Met for nine years, was arrested and interviewed. At first he claimed he thought the boy was over 16 but he later admitted four counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child. Brigham also resigned from the Met police force.
At Portsmouth Crown Court yesterday Brigham, of Hackney, London, was sent to prison for 30 months.

A paedophile who worked at a hospital in Harrow was spared jail this work despite downloading more than 1,000 indecent pictures of children on his laptop.
David Murrell, a former IT consultant at the Royal National Orthopedic Hospital in Stanmore, was caught with 1,201 images on his computer after police raided his flat, which was on the grounds of the hospital. Police began a search of the Sir Henry Floyd Court flat after staff became suspicious of the 48-year-old.
Co-workers had caught the pervert looking at adult pornography while at work and an investigation by the police uncovered the haul of indecent photos. He has since left his job at the hospital. He walked free from Harrow Crown Court on Monday this week after avoiding a jail term. He was instead handed three years' community service and ordered to attend an internet sex offender group programme.
Sentencing Murrell, her honour Judge Levy said: “These are very serious offences and exploited children. The images I have looked at clearly exploited children.” But she went on to say: “While these are serious offences, and there can be no doubt about that, you are not a person who has paid for or distributed images, and I think that makes a difference.”

Two victims of a man jailed two weeks ago for abusing boys in his charge at a Surrey school are to pursue their grievances through the civil courts.
Keith Hammerton, 69, of Battersea was jailed for six years on November 1 for sexual offences he committed against boys while employed as a housemaster at Kinton approved school in Mayford in the 1970s.
Now two of his victims, who wish to remain anonymous for the time being, are to bring civil actions against Surrey County Council, which ran the school.
"Even when members of the staff brought their concerns to the attention of the headmaster, they seem to have been treated lightly, since Hammerton was first suspended but later reinstated. It seems that those in charge of the home and the investigating authorities failed in their duty to protect vulnerable young people in their care, despite warning signs and numerous complaints by both staff and pupils."

A convicted paedophile has been arrested while working as a children's nurse in a north-west London hospital.
Lars Gellner, 37, was arrested at work at Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow. He had been convicted in his absence in Cambodia for attacks on boys but was able to get through security checks as he has no European criminal record. A Home Office spokesman refused to comment on the case but it is believed Gellner is being held at a remand centre while his future is decided. Gellner, who is German, had been arrested in October 2008 after applying for a UK visa for a 14-year-old Burmese boy he wanted to bring here.

A policeman who was praised for bravery and his work in anti-paedophile operations has been jailed after downloading child pornography from the internet using his credit card.
Sergeant Richard Curry, 39, pleaded guilty to six charges of possessing more than 1,300 sickening pictures showing children as young as seven having sex with adults. He was jailed for six months on Tuesday.
Curry had been awarded a Quality Service Report for helping American police in their global crackdown on paedophiles. However, he himself was caught when US officers passed his details to Scotland Yard's Paedophile Unit.
Curry, who worked at Hammersmith Police Station, admitted actively searching out child porn websites and paying one 30 dollar weekly subscription to a site called Lolita World. Louise McCulloch, mitigating, emphasised his previously exemplary record. He had been awarded Quality Service Reports for his bravery during a siege, during riots in 1999 and for his attempts to save a woman who had tried to commit suicide.

A council official who spent years building up a child porn library has been put behind bars for three years.
Thomas Caulfield, 40, had thousands of forbidden images depicting youngsters of all ages, including babies and toddlers, being subjected to extreme abuse. Some, which he shared with fellow paedophiles, showed helpless 13-year-olds bound and hooded.
When police examined his computer they found he had sent scores to a fellow paedophile, London's Southwark Crown Court heard. They also discovered a chatroom exchange where he was asked what his "favourite ages" were. "Early teens, 13-14ish, sometimes younger," he replied. "I don't mind if cute. I'm cool with it all."

A former RE and English teacher has been jailed for six months for possessing child pornography.
Jeffrey Jones, 61, admitted seven counts of making indecent images of children at an earlier hearing, Southwark Crown Court heard. His house was raided by police in 2006 following information that he had been in contact with a convicted paedophile.
The retired teacher, from Couldson, south London, was placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for seven years. Jones and his girlfriend were swingers and had engaged in sexual activity with strangers, and advertised on a special website, the court heard. The former teacher at a school in Warlingham, Surrey, used to check out people who responded by getting into correspondence with them, and that was how he came in contact with the convicted paedophile who was being monitored by police.

Thomas Corley, 40 - who was convicted of downloading child porn two years ago - also breached the sex offenders' register by failing to notify police about his movements. Former Barclays International and Prudential worker Corley with an IQ of 171, failed to realise he had an obligation to sign on the register.
He was found by officers with his privates exposed as he urinated outside St Alban Church, Dagenham. Snaresbrook Crown Court heard outraged witnesses called police after spotting Corley spread-eagled at the height of the school run at about 3.30pm on May 22 last year.

A Twickenham teacher - who was working at a Hampton school when arrested - has been jailed after 14,000 child pornography images were found on his home computer.
Gary Clement, 33, had been employed at Buckingham Primary School for three months when his Talma Gardens home was raided by police on December 17, 2002. He was jailed for two years at Middlesex Guildhall Crown Court on Friday and banned for life from working with children. Despite the married teacher's massive collection of pictures of child abuse, Richmond upon Thames Council insists that Buckingham pupils were not at any risk.
Clement had started work at Buckingham in September 2002, said a council spokesman. Colleagues had no inkling of his sick desires until December 16, when headteacher Marion Conway received a surprise visit from detectives, who confided their suspicions. In a dawn raid the following day, officers found 13,708 images, including 126 depicting sadism and bestiality towards children and 552 of adults raping children. He was arrested and subsequently admitted eight counts of making indecent photographs of children.

Paedophile piano teacher Jon Fowke continued to deny he had abducted a vulnerable 13-year-old Island girl to subject her to a horrifying sexual assault even as he was led away to start a six-year jail sentence.
Just as he had done 12 years before, when he was imprisoned for a year for indecently assaulting girls aged just nine and 12, he forced his latest victim to re-live her ordeal by giving evidence in court after he pleaded not guilty.
The judge who sentenced Fowke at Portsmouth Crown Court on Monday, said the London musician, formerly of Sandown, continued to deny he carried out the attack and remained a high risk to children.
Fowke, 59, of Doncaster Road, Edmonton, London, a father of two, was convicted on December 1 after an eight-day trial of grooming the girl for sex for a month with a string of more than 300 text messages and calls; abducting her and taking her to a secluded Parkhurst Forest clearing; and sexually and indecently assaulting her.

A paedophile who fled to Peckham after being jailed for 77 years in Spain and then worked with children after passing criminal checks has been arrested.
Jose Luis Magana Chueca, 55, was convicted in 1991 but was granted bail for an appeal and escaped. He then ran a youth football team in west London.
Chueca was arrested in Holburn after a boy, 10, complained of a sex assault.

An ex-children’s worker at two day-care centres has been jailed for 15 months after more than 5,000 pornographic images of children were found on his computer.
John Lockie, 44, worked at the council-run Chiswick Child and Family Centre in Devonshire Street for 17 years, between 1984 to 2001 when it closed. The nursery operated under a number of different names including the Hogarth and Belmont Under 5s club.
Lockie, who lived in Brentford at the time of his arrest, admitted to eight counts of possession and of making indecent images of children at Isleworth Crown Court on Friday last week.
Child protection officers raided his home in Cherry Crescent in October 2002 after being tipped off by FBI officers as part of Operation Ore. Hounslow Council wrote to around 35 families who had most recently used the centre, informing them of the charges against Lockie. A spokeswoman for the council commented: “We are shocked to hear that John Lockie has been found guilty of these charges. “We have checked our records very carefully and there is nothing that could raise any concerns during his time with us.”

A former caretaker at a local primary school has been jailed after police found more than 13,000 indecent images of children at his home.
Peter Miller, aged 53 and a father of four, who had worked at Avonmore Primary School for ten years was jailed for less than two years after pleading guilty to eleven counts counts of making, possessing and distributing indecent images of children.
He stored the photos on several computers which he kept in a house owned by the school on Earsby Street. He also used them to enter chat rooms and share photos with other paedophiles. Millar was exposed following a raid on the house in September of last year. The police have stated that some of the pictures found were at the most extreme end of the scale used to rank child pornography.
A statement from Hammersmith and Fulham Council issued on behalf of Avonmore Primary School stated, "During the investigation Miller was banned from coming near the school site. None of these crimes relate to pupils at the school but we are pleased that the police investigation uncovered Miller's activities

A married father of two who kept a stash of child pornography in his garden shed has escaped jail.
Top Ministry of Defence (MoD) official Alan Pickwell, aged 60, of Bedonwell Road, Bexleyheath, had films and photos of young boys and girls being tied up and raped. Pickwell pleaded guilty at Middlesex Guildhall Crown Court to two charges of having indecent photos of a child. He was caught after builders found two brown envelopes containing 212 indecent pictures and printouts of paedophilic literature which he had thrown into a skip during building work at his home. He was arrested in August 2003.
The court was told Pickwell had been given the 185 films and photos by his long-time friend Leonard Young, aged 67, from St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex, with whom he had spent many years swapping blue movies. Young handed Pickwell a package of photos of child abuse, telling him: "See if you like this." When police searched Pickwell's house they found more images hidden in the garden shed.
Pickwell, who has been married for 35 years and has a grown-up son and daughter, has worked for the MoD for 14 years and had an extremely high security clearance. The court heard after being suspended by the MoD, he will keep his job but his security clearance has been reduced. Young was found with a library of more than 10,000 images which detectives described as some of the worst they had ever seen and involved sexual torture, newborn babies and bestiality.
Because of his previous good character and the small number of images involved, Judge Timothy Lawrence sentenced Pickwell to three years' community rehabilitation and ordered he should be placed on the sex offenders' register for five years. Young, who admitted 17 charges of making indecent photos of children, two of distributing and one of having indecent photos of a child, was sentenced to four years in jail but will serve only nine months in prison and the rest on licence. He will be placed on the sex offenders' register for 10 years

A former Scoutmaster was caught when police found a home-movie made for him by a North-East paedophile.
David Daines, 44, was caught with a camcorder tape of a nine-year-old boy who had been groomed for sex by fellow Scoutmaster Paul Woodruff.
The youngster was heard to say: "This is for you uncle David," before he was molested by Woodruff, of Middlesbrough, a former member of the Scouts Association, and the breakaway Baden-Powell Scouts Association.
Police found correspondence between the two men at Woodruff's home after his arrest in 2001. Woodruff was convicted of the rape and two indecent assaults of a teenage Scout two years ago. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison.

Joseph Delgado, 53, of Edgware, north-west London, insisted the scouts slept next to him in his tent. If they awoke during the assaults he would pretend to be asleep to make them think they had imagined it, Harrow Crown Court heard. He was convicted of four counts of indecent assault in 1995 and 1996.
Delgado, a former teacher and an assistant district commissioner in the movement for 16 years, "denied absolutely" abusing any of the scouts in his care and protested his innocence throughout the three-week trial.

A primary teacher has been charged with the rape and sexual assault of a young girl.
Robert Stringer, 56, is accused of raping his victim three times and sexually assaulting her a further eight times between June and December 2007. He faces further claims of indecent assault against another girl between 1999 and 2000. Both children were under the age of 13 at the time of the alleged assaults.
Mr Stringer was sacked from Canonbury Primary in Islington earlier this year. The action was taken after it emerged that he was being investigated for showing the film Shakespeare in Love, which includes sex scenes, to children at another school. It is understood the alleged sex attack victims came forward after publicity in the local and national media about his dismissal.
Canonbury Primary, whose pupils include one of London Mayor Boris Johnson's children and a child of Lord Adonis, the transport minister, has suffered setbacks this year. A solicitor caught with more than 8,000 pornographic images of children has avoided jail after impressing a judge with his determination to overcome his "addiction" to such material.
Child porn was found on computer equipment at Alexander James John's home in Hendy and at the Swansea office in Walter Road where he specialised in conveyancing. John, aged 57, pleaded guilty to 21 offences of making and possessing indecent images of youngsters when he appeared at Swansea Crown Court on Friday
Gerald Neave, prosecuting, said John was charged after being arrested at his home in Iscoed Road on April 29. "As part of a national operation information had been received by the police that he had downloaded, and was in possession of, images of child abuse," said Mr Neave. Experts who analysed computer equipment owned by the defendant found 8,121 indecent images of children.
Mr Allchurch said of John, latterly of Camona Drive, Swansea Marina: "He acknowledges he has an addiction to pornography and he would like some medical help in dealing with this." Sentencing, Judge Keith Thomas made John the subject of a three-year community order, but directed that he must attend a community sex offenders' group programme as part of it.

Yesterday Suraj Gharu, 25, was sentenced to five years for sex offences and removing a child from the care of social services. Isleworth Crown Court heard Gharu preyed on the girl by visiting her at the children's home where she lived. He befriended her and picked her up to stay with him several times, but did not return her.

A vicar who presided over a Bocking congregation for 11 years has pleaded guilty to possessing more than 1,000 indecent images of children.
Appearing at Chelmsford Crown Court on Tuesday, Trevor Diaper, 58, admitted six charges of making indecent images of children, including photos and moving photos, and a further charge of possessing 1,145 indecent images of children. The images, found on his computer, ranged from the least serious level one images to level four images, which are rated as the second most serious. The prosecution has decided not to proceed with a further seven counts of indecent assault against a child, which Diaper, former vicar at St Peter's Church in St Peter's Road, had denied.
Diocese spokesperson Ralph Meloy said: "The diocese of Chelmsford and the Church of England are shocked and saddened that a clergyman has fallen so far short of the standards expected. We give the highest priority to the care and protection of all children and vulnerable people. We have policies, procedures and training schemes that uphold high standards of conduct."
Diaper had been vicar at St Peter's since 1997 and was also chaplain at Braintree ambulance station. He has been suspended since he was arrested on suspicion of historic child abuse on June 26 last year. The Bishop of Chelmsford is now due to ban him from holding office for life. Timothy Edmeades, 33, abused his position of trust when he sexually assaulted the two children on swimming trips, a court heard. Edmeades had befriended the boys aged 9 and ten and then tried to discredit them after they complained of the abuse. The Cub group helper groomed the two schoolboys, who cannot be named for legal reasons, before sexually assaulting them.

Steven Taylor’s name was put on the register after he was forced to quit one job because of fears about his behaviour. However the warning was not automatically passed on to other education authorities and he simply moved 200 miles away and found work at other schools. In one he “groomed” a girl of 11 and eventually committed a string of offences including rape.

An Army major who served in Iraq has been jailed for two years for having child porn, it was revealed yesterday.
Robert Bennett, 52, was caught with thousands of vile images - many of them rated extreme by law. Military cops were tipped off by the Child Exploitation Protection Team, which hunts down perverts. Computer equipment was seized from Bennett's room at the HQ of the support regiment for the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps in Rheindahlen, Germany.
The widower, who rose from the rank of private in a long career, was flown to Britain and held in custody. He pleaded guilty to nine sample charges at a court martial in Colchester, Essex. He also admitted four of possessing indecent photographs of children, two of possessing extreme pornographic images and three of distributing the pictures. Judge Michael Hunter, vice Judge Advocate General of the Forces, told the hearing: "There are far more photographs than contained in the nine charges - these are only samples."

Former mayor David Lee has been put on the sex offenders’ register for keeping child porn.
Following a year-long investigation, former Tory councillor Lee, has been cautioned by police for possessing indecent images of children and placed on the sex offenders' register for two years. The case began in September when the police were contacted by Chelmsford Council over concerns of child porn on a council computer, when Lee, 44, was still mayor.
At the end of October, Lee, a father of three, announced he was standing down from office around the same time police searched his home and the allegations went public. Detectives from the force's child abuse investigation unit studied computer equipment taken from Lee's house.
The council said it was “incredibly dismayed” by the findings. Lee was elected as second youngest mayor in Chelmsford's history in May 2007, serving for five months before resigning. The IT worker's former position as vice chair of Boswells School, in Chelmsford, was put on hold when the news broke last year. Despite a number of attempts to contact him, Lee made no comment at the time of going to press.

A former police officer who had sex with an under-age girl while working at a children’s home has been jailed for five years and four months.
David Miller , 32 of Evans Street, Ashton under Lyne, had a relationship for around six months with the child, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, while he was a residential care worker. Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court was told that staff began to have concerns about his conduct with the girl. She went missing from the home 20 times, once for nine days. The dates she was missing coincided with times when Miller was off work.
Judge Jeffrey Lewis told him: "This home should have been a place of safety and sanctuary for her, but your attentions resulted in it being quite the reverse. You exploited and abused her for your own sexual gratification. Paedophile Bill Starling, jailed for the ritual abuse of 12 children at two care homes, raped and assaulted dozens more vulnerable youngsters.
The detective in charge of the nationwide operation to convict Starling, of Rantree Fold, Basildon, said there was evidence that the evil pervert abused at least 70 children at the homes in Hornchurch and Basildon.
Det Chf Insp Danny O'Malley said many of the victims were too emotionally scarred to give evidence against their tormentors Starling and his former boss Alan Prescott, who was on Monday jailed for two years for his part in the scandal. The revelation came as police and social services appealed for thousands of people who spent time in the two children's homes as youngsters to contact them following the jailing of Starling and Prescott.
Starling, 74, was jailed for 14 years after being found guilty of a string of attacks against children. Prescott, 62, a former magistrate, walked free from court despite being jailed because of the time he had spent in custody. Starling was convicted of 19 offences, including two rapes, involving ten girls and one boy over a 20-year period at St Leonards in Hornchurch and Greensteads, in Basildon, where he was in charge. Both homes have since been closed. Now specially trained detectives are trying to contact other youngsters who were placed in the care of Tower Hamlets Council, which ran both homes, from 1965 onwards

A former teacher who downloaded more than 1,000 child porn images had his jail sentence slashed after his partner pleaded to the court.
Mark Anthony Royle, 40, of Raphael Avenue, Tilbury was sentenced to two years' prison last November after pleading guilty to 16 offences of making and possessing indecent photographs or pseudo photographs of a child.
London's Court of Appeal has now cut it back to 18 months after Royle's partner wrote to them to describe the anguish the prison sentence had caused her family. She said she would stand by her partner despite finding the images "sickening in the extreme"

A piano teacher has been convicted of sexually abusing a youngster while giving her lessons.
The teacher, from Saffron Walden, abused the girl over an 18- month period when she was aged between eight and nine. Paul Boreham, 44, of High Street, had denied six charges of sexually assaulting the child and three of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. He was found guilty at Chelmsford Crown Court and remanded on bail for five weeks for presentence reports.

A former Met police officer who indecently assaulted two teenage scouts during a camping trip has been jailed for three and a half years.
Peter Alderson, from Woodford Green, Essex, assaulted the two boys over six years while he was a scout leader. London's Southwark Crown Court heard on one occasion Alderson assaulted one of the boys inside his sleeping bag. A social worker jailed for indecently assaulting children while working for Manchester Social Services "abused his position of trust", police have said.
Philip Noel Roe, 59, from Lancaster Drive, Hornchurch, Essex, was sentenced to 12-and-a-half years after he was convicted of 15 counts of indecent assault at Manchester Crown Court. His conviction follows a seven-year police investigation into allegations of historic physical and sexual abuse at residential care homes on children as young as five.
Roe's offences only came to light after five of his victims came forward in response to the police investigation, codenamed Operation Cleopatra, which was launched in April 1997 to investigate complaints of abuse from ex-residents of care homes.
The men had all been assaulted by Roe between 1982 and 1988 when Roe was working for the city's Social Services visiting hundreds of children in foster or care homes. The victims were aged between five and 15 at the time.

A former Chelmsford teacher has been jailed for the rape and sexual abuse of a six-year-old girl during the 1970s.
Richard Atkins, 58, fled to Ireland after the attacks, and was arrested when he returned, shortly before last Christmas. Police, who had been planning to extradite him, were waiting for him when he arrived home. He admitted rape, eight assaults and one charge of sexual assault against the girl, who was not a pupil at Sandon or any other schools where he taught, which include schools in Kent and his native Coventry.

The health worker who hid his child rape conviction to get a job at a Colchester hospital was struck off yesterday - and could now face further action.
Occupational therapist Samuel Odinga was convicted in 2002 of raping a girl under 14 when he was living in Missouri, United States, the Health Professions Council conduct and competence committee heard. The 45-year-old later came to the UK and successfully applied for the job at Essex Rivers Healthcare NHS Trust in November 2003.

A sexual predator has been jailed for abusing young girls more than 40 years after starting his perverted campaign.
David Greensmith, 62, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for rapes and indecent assaults dating back as far as 1961. The former social worker repeatedly targeted his victims, who were as young as seven, in an "almost continuous code of conduct".
Judge Rupert Overbury, sentencing at Basildon Crown Court today, was convinced Greensmith was "predatory" and remained a threat to youngsters. He told Greensmith: "All these incidents of sexual abuse have involved serious breaches of trust and involved small young girls. You were always some years older than your victims and you took every opportunity available to you to satisfy your own perverted desires. You have shown no remorse whatsoever." He added: "You will always pose some danger, especially to young girls."
Greensmith, of Tower Street, Brightlingsea, had denied all the charges against him. But a jury found him guilty of raping a schoolgirl and indecently assaulting two others. The convictions on five rapes, seven indecent assaults and two attempted rapes were all based on sample charges.
During the trial, the court heard Greensmith started raping his first victim while he was just a teenager. He threatened her so she would not reveal the "dirty, filthy secret" and the abuse eventually plunged her into clinical depression. "You took every opportunity to sexually abuse her," said Judge Overbury. "What you did to her over those years was vile and reprehensible. The horrors that she must have endured as a little girl are almost unimaginable."
Greensmith continued to abuse girls during drunken binges at his house in Wivenhoe, where he lived in the early 1980s. One witness described his home as being like "Disneyland".
Judge Overbury said Greensmith's prison term would have been longer if he had been sentenced as a younger man in the 1960s or 1980s. Stephen Rose, mitigating, said the defendant would have a hard time in jail because he was frail and unwell. He suffers heart problems and has hemochromatosis, a disease which causes joint pain and means he has to walk with a stick. "At the moment it's a very bleak picture for him," said Mr Rose. Greensmith was put on the sex offenders' register for life and ordered not to have any direct contact with children under 16 until further notice

A music teacher who sexually groomed one of his pupils has been jailed for 12 months.
David Howell, 34, of Bicknacre, Essex, sent the girl a string of sexually-explicit messages, London's Snaresbrook Crown Court heard. The jury on Friday convicted him of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity "while in a position of trust". Howell had denied the charge, claiming he was the victim of a pupil vendetta.

A paedophile teacher, whose actions led to a former pupil to jump from a window in a suicide bid years after he had been assaulted, has been jailed for two-and-a-half years.
Adrian Malton, 49, of Harris Green, Dunmow, who assaulted his young victim over a period of 18 months some 20 years ago, was a teacher at Holmwood House School, Chitts Hill, Colchester, at the time.
Chelmsford Crown Court was told that Malton taught Latin, but looked after boys on various extra curricual activities. When he was 17 the boy jumped out of a window in a suicide bid and broke his cheek, the court heard. Jailing Malton Judge Charles Gratwicke told him: “You treated him as a star pupil and the offences occurred in circumstances where you groomed him. In so doing, you grossly abused the trust shown to you by those employing you, his parents and him. Your behaviour must have caused disturbance to him.”

A former assistant director of social services, magistrate and Labour councillor has been jailed for abusing boys in a children's home scandal which may have had as many as 70 victims over 30 years.
Alan Prescott, 62, who was described at the Old Bailey as a "pillar of his local community", was sentenced to two years in prison after admitting indecently assaulting four boys in his care between 1970 and 1980 while he was superintendent of a Tower Hamlets children's home. After being in charge of the home, he became assistant director of social services at the borough, before moving on to become chief executive of Toynbee Hall, a charitable organisation, until his arrest in August last year.
The court heard that the former Havering councillor, fondled boys aged 15 to 19 as they lay in bed, confessed after the trial of William Starling, a colleague and "house parent" at St Leonard's, the home in Hornchurch, Essex, over which Prescott presided from 1968 until it closed in 1984. In April, Starling was jailed for 14 years for 19 offences including two rapes, buggery and indecent assault, on 10 girls and one boy as young as five over a 20 year period at St Leonard's and The Greensteads, a home in Basildon, Essex.
The men's sentences, handed down in April and, for Prescott, last Thursday can only now be reported after the judge yesterday halted proceedings against Haydn Davies, 62, from Plymouth, a third alleged paedophile who was facing offences of assault involving boys at St Leonard's in the 1970s and 1980s. The case against him was dropped after police lost video evidence from alleged victims, taken during an earlier, aborted, investigation and the defence successfully argued that without this he could not be guaranteed a fair trial.
Speaking after yesterday's hearing, Detective Inspector Daniel O'Malley, said Operation Mapperton had unveiled a "harrowing" tale of systematic child abuse at the homes, and that the investigation was continuing. With 3,000 children having passed through the homes while Prescott, Starling and Davies were working there, he believed as many as 70 may have been abused

Bradford Crown Court convicted Hargreaves of eight charges of molesting two 11-year-old girls, including one of attempted rape.

A Bradford councillor gave cash to two young girls after sexually abusing them, a court heard. Bob Hargreaves, 62, a Liberal Democrat councillor for the Bolton and Undercliffe ward, went on trial at Bradford Crown Court yesterday after denying charges of indecency with a child, indecent assault and attempted rape. The jury was told the abuse took place in a butcher's shop in 1992 and ended when Hargreaves allegedly tried to rape one of the girls. Neither of the girls can be identified for legal reasons. Prosecutor Sharon Beattie told the court the abuse had started when Hargreaves coerced one of the girls, who were both 11 years old at the time, to perform a sexual act on him.
A PROMINENT Worcestershire councillor has been charged with possessing indecent photographs of a child. Malvern Hills district councillor Michael Angell is accused of 17 separate counts of possessing indecent photographs on Wednesday, November 15, 2006. The Liberal Democrat/Green councillor, who was elected in 2003, appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court on Tuesday, April 3. The case was adjourned until Wednesday, May 23, to enable the Crown Prosecution Service to decide on the seriousness of the charges. A further point on law, people think it is technically illegal to record phone calls or undertake any "remote" surveillance where you are not in attendance yourself under the RIP act. HOWEVER according to the RIP act it is not illegal to record them without informing the other party but you are not allowed to disclose the contents to a third party.
Nobody to my knowledge has yet put to a Court that they have such "remote" recordings in their possession and that it is in the interest of children and law to have them disclosed, if a Court say's yes then you can and this will set legal precedence. One hopes this will be done some time soon!
For now if Cafcass or S.S come to your house or you go to a meeting with them YOU CAN RECORD IT WITHOUT TELLING THEM, if they think you are you are under NO legal obligation to tell them, it is NOT a "breach of their rights" as some whine!

An experienced social worker from Birmingham has been struck off after she failed to declare she had been convicted of theft.
The General Social Care Council (GSCC) also accepted an allegation that Verona Reeves threatened her landlords and the couple's children.
A GSCC conduct committee said Reeves' behaviour amounted to misconduct and said "such a grave case" necessitated her removal from the professional register.

Alan Rhodes, who was employed by Leeds City Council, was found guilty of misconduct by the Committee for forming an inappropriate personal relationship with a person who uses services. Rhodes was the allocated social worker to that person and her children, who had been on the Child Protection Register.

Ms Plumstead is completely blind to the enormous responsibilities she holds and appears to have no concept of the damning consequences of her article to the thousands of parents who have had their children forcibly removed from them - the children I refer to have never been abused by their parents.
At one point she states: "In my courtroom, there is a big, lovely coat of arms, with animals on it, such as lions, so that’s always a good thing to talk about with the children". Using symbols of fiction such as Lions with crowns and fictitious Unicorns to sooth a child being ripped from those that love them is arrogant fantasy. I have personally heard children screaming and crying in despair at being forcibly taken from their parents arms in court, while Judge and court staff remain aloof and inpatient for the hearing to conclude.

The safety of vulnerable children who ARE being abused is paramount; whether the abuse is being inflicted within the family or within the child care system. I understand the necessity for the intervention of Social Services and Judicial decisions when a vulnerable child is in need of protection. But I do not understand the blatant disregard for parents who have had their children removed for reasons of poverty or where parents may have learning difficulties or when questionable claims have been made by unqualified individuals about the mental health of a parent.
I would be most interested to see Ms Plumstead's response after she has reflected on the consequences of her article. She must realise that grieving families do not find proceedings in her court room as 'Jolly good fun!'
